The Bay on a Budget: Where to Eat?
One thing about the Bay Area is that it does not come cheap. While it is fun, vibrant, filled with culture, and home to amazing food, the overall cost of living and expenses is not always the most feasible. As a foodie myself, I always make note of spots that give me a full plate of flavor for a small bill. Especially as a college student or young adult, finding those hidden yet affordable gems in big cities is key! Below, I present a wide array of spots across the Bay that will give you the best bang for your buck.
Zareens
Located in Mountain View and Palo Alto, Zareen’s serves some of the best butter chicken, garlic naan, and rice you’ll find. Those are the most popular dishes, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Make sure to add a mango lassi to your order—you’ll have the best sleep of your life.
Oren’s Hummus
Craving a Mediterranean fix? Oren’s Hummus serves some of the best vegetarian and non-vegetarian Mediterranean plates I’ve found in the Bay. The name may be in the restaurant itself, but the variety of hummus they serve is truly mouthwatering. With locations all across the Bay, it’s super easy to find and very affordable.
Zona Rosa
Located right by Santa Clara University, Zona Rosa and its sister restaurant, Luna, are adorable spots with amazing cocktails, chips and guac, and larger plates. Whether you’re looking for a quick and cute date night or a casual dinner with friends, these sister restaurants—located right next to each other—are perfect and well-priced.
Yo Yo’s
Oh my god. If you love warm, delicious udon, you must go here ASAP. For less than $20, this cute takeaway spot on Pacific Avenue in San Francisco is an absolute gem. Owned and run by the sweetest couple, it’s a must-try.
Tartine Manufactory
With locations all across San Francisco, you’ll find some of the freshest and best sourdough here. Some might say it’s on the pricier side for a sandwich, but for the quality and freshness of the ingredients, it’s totally worth it. Not only can you buy loaves of sourdough, but you can also choose from their many delicious tartines and pair them with one of their fabulous pastries.
Goop Kitchen
Thank you, Gwyneth Paltrow, for bringing Goop Kitchen to San Jose! If you haven’t heard of it, do yourself a favor and give it a quick search. It’s both healthy and delicious at a pretty reasonable price, considering the portions and variety. While there is no dine-in restaurant, they offer delivery with no fees. I recommend any of the pizzas—you will not be disappointed.
Dia de Pesca
Stick with me here—especially those who go to SCU. This is truly one of the cheapest yet most filling spots and has been a crucial part of my college experience. Their ginormous goblets of margaritas never disappoint, paired with an expansive menu. Not to mention, the staff is absolutely the sweetest. Grab your friends and go, whether it’s for a casual night out or as a pregame spot.
